It must not be modified without prior consultation with the Normalisation Department of this Group. It is in conformity with the agreement reached between this Group and PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN in JANUARY 1999. 1.OBJECT AND FIELD OF APPLICATION The object of this method is to determine the tensile characteristics of a plastic sheet. It applies to plastic sheets as well as plastic tapes and adhesive plastic tapes ... The tensile modulus is determined in accordance with test method D41 1004. 2.PRINCIPLE To measure the load required to break a sheet test specimen and its elongation at the time of the break. Carry out the same determination at any specific point on the tensile curve, such as the yield point (first constraint). 3.EQUIPMENT 3.1.TENSILE TEST MACHINE MEETING THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS : ? Recording device for the load-elongation curve. ? Tensile loads stated and recorded with a maximum relative error of 1 %. ? Elongations stated and recorded with a maximum relative error of 1 %. ? Load scale selected so that the measurements may be carried out between 20 % and 80 % of the maximum of the scale used. ? Constant travelling speed of the moving jaw equal to 100 mm/min – 10 mm/min or any other speed specified in the documents. ? Jaws of shape and size which can neither damage the test specimen nor allow it to slip during the test. The width of the jaws must be greater than the width of the test specimens. 3.2.CONDITIONED ENCLOSURE at 23 °C – 2 °C and 50 % – 5 % relative humidity. 3.3.CUTTING TOOL Razor blade with ruler, die cutter, non pinking shears, …PSA PEUGEOT - CITRO?N PLASTIC SHEETS - TENSILE D41 1009 2/5 OR : 01/06/1978 B:18/02/1999 General use 4.PREPARATION OF TEST SPECIMENS ? At a distance of more than 5 cm from the edges of the part to be examined, take test specimens of minimum length 150 mm and width of 25 mm ± 0,5 mm. The cutting is carried out with the tool (3.3.). The edges of the test specimens must be completely free from notches which may cause premature breaks. ? In the case of tapes narrower than 25 mm, the width of the test specimen shall be that of the tape. ? For each test, cut out 5 test specimens in the longitudinal direction and 5 test specimens in the transverse direction. ? Make 2 reference lines at a distance of 100 mm – 0,5 mm on the test specimen at rest, using a process which does not damage the test specimens. ? Condition the test specimens in the enclosure (3.2.) for 22 h – 2h . 5.METHOD OF OPERATION ? Carry out the tests in the enclosure (3.2). ? Set the load scale, the elongation scale and the travelling speed of the moving cross member. ? Place the two jaws at 100 mm from each other. ? Fix, flush with the reference line, one end of the test specimen into the upper jaw and tightening taking the greatest care in order avoid breaks at the level of the jaws caused by too much tightening of the test specimen. ? Slip the lower part of the test specimen flush with the reference line into the lower jaw. Tighten the jaw with the same precaution as previously. The test specimen centre line must merge with the tensile test machine centre line. ? Start the machine and record the tensile curve (see Appendix). ? After rupture of the test specimen, stop the machine. ? Record the load required to cause the break of the test specimen and the corresponding elongation. ? When a test specimen breaks at the level of the jaws, discard it and carry out a new test. The result of the defective test shall be disregarded. ? If applicable, record the loads and elongations at any specific point on the curve, for example : yield point (first constraint) or the load required for elongations of 20 %, 50 %, 100 % (see Appendix). 6.EXPRESSION OF RESULTS The load at break or the load required for a given elongation shall be equal to the mean of the 5 values found (N) in each direction. The elongation at break shall be equal to the mean of the 5 values found in each direction and expressed in % of the initial length.
