Diagnostic Tester Usage Use and Limitations Serial DataSection 6 TOYOTA Technical Training Serial Data Scan tool allows a “quick check” of sensors actuators, and ECM calculated data. Thelinegraphmodedisplaysthevoltagesignaloftwodataparameters simultaneouslyovertime.Itcanbeselectedfromanydatalistdisplay withtheactivekey(F4).Thetimelinecanbechangedtoscalesof5, 10,15,30,60,100,200,and300secondsbypressingtheleftandright arrowkeys. Thedataparametersaredisplayedatthetopofthescreen.Theycan bereplacedbyhighlightingtheoneyouwanttochangeusingtheup anddownarrowkeys.BypressingtheYESkeythenextparameteron thedatalistisselectedandpressingtheNOkey,thepreviousparameter isselected.Theentiredatalistcanbescannedoneitematatimeuntil thedesiredparameterisfound.EachtimetheYESorNOkeyispressed thenewparameterisdisplayedonthescreen.PresstheENTERkeyto freezethedisplayand#andSENDtoprintwhat’sonthescreen. Line Graph Mode The Data parameters are displayed at the top of the screen. Tostartstripchart,pressthe#andF8atthesametime.Press#and F9tostopstripchart. Strip Chart Mode Up to five parameters can be displayed on VP-411 printer at one time. Thesnapshotfeatureallowsyoutorecorddatabeforeandafterafault occurs.Thisprovidesforcarefulexaminationofalldataparametersin thesecondsjustbeforeandafterthevehicleexhibitsadriveability condition,orsetsadiagnostictroublecode. SelectManualSnapshotfromthecurrentdatamenu.SelectAllData, UserListorCustomDataforthesnapshotcapture.Dependingonthe datalistyouchoose,eachdataframecanrepresentasnapshottaken asfrequentlyasevery200ms,forsmalluserdatalists,toas infrequentlyasevery1.5secondsforanAllDatalist.Themoredata yourequest,theslowertheframetoframerefreshrate. Thetriggerpointcanbeadjustedtoyourowndiagnosticneeds.Setting theTriggerPointclosertotheSTARTofthesnapshotallowsyouto lookatmoredataafterthetriggerpoint.SettingtheTriggerPoint closertotheENDofthesnapshotallowsyoutolookatthedatabefore thetriggerpoint Adjusting Trigger Point Setting the trigger point closer to the END of the snapshot allows you to look at the data before the trigger point. Tosetthesnapshottotriggerautomatically,selectCodesSnapshot fromtheCurrentDatamenu.Selectthedatalistsimilartothemanual trigger(AllData,UserListorCustomData)forthesnapshotcapture. TheCodesSnapshotfunctioncapturesasnapshotofdataaftera troublecodeisreceived.Whenthetriggeroccurs,Trigger“isdisplayed onthescreenwhiledataisbeingsaved. Aftercompletingthedatacapture,thesnapshotcanbesavedforlater review.Thescreenpromptsyoutoeithersavethesnapshotorquit. PressingYESwillsavethedatasetandpressingNOwillcontinue withoutsaving.SelectingNOwillallowyoutoreviewthelastsnapshot byputtingthescreeninDataDisplayphase. Snapshot Save Pressing YES will save the data set and pressing NO will continue without saving. Toviewstoreddata,selectReplaySnapshotfromtheCurrentData Menu.Eachsnapshotistimeanddatestamped.Usingtheup/down arrows,highlightthesnapshotyouwishtodisplay.PressingENTER willdisplaythesnapshotdata. Oscilloscope Display An Oscilloscope allows you to plot changing electrical signals on a graphic display. Voltage is displayed on the vertical scale time on the horizontal scale. Therateatwhichthescopetracemoveshorizontallyacrossthedisplay isreferredtoasthesweeprateandisdeterminedbythetrigger.The triggerisusuallytheinputsignalsothatthescopetracecanbe synchronizedtothesignalevent.Theinputsignalcancomefrom eithertheautoprobeordirectlyfromtheV-BoB.Thisissimilartoa timinglight.Thetriggeristheinductivepickuphookedaroundthe#1 plugwire.Thissynchronizesthelighttothesignal.Thediagnostic testeralsohasanautomatictriggerfeaturewhichdrivesthesweep independentlyoftheinputsignal.Automatictriggerisusedfor displayinganalogsignalswhichcannottriggerthesweep. OscilloscopeSection 6 TOYOTA Technical Training TheAutoprobeisusedtomanuallyprobespecificterminalstomonitor thecircuit.TheAutoprobeisconnectedtotheInstrumentPort(I/P) connectoratthebottomofthediagnostictester.Itprovidesthe followingtestcapabilities:voltage,frequencyandoscilloscope functions. Formoreaccuratereadings,itisrecommendedthattheautoprobebe calibratedbeforemeasuringvoltageorusingtheoscilloscope.Select CalibratefromtheAutoprobeMenuandgroundtheautoprobeatthe batterynegativeterminalorbodyground.Pressandholdtheswitchon theAutoprobe.Thetesterscreenconfirmsthatthecalibrationis complete. RefertotheTesterOperator’sManualtochecktheinternalcircuitsof theautoprobe. Autoprobe The autoprobe is connected to the I/P connector at the bottom of the diagnostic tester and monitors individual terminals. Thescreencapturesdisplayedonthefollowingpagesrepresentthe transmissionspeedsensoratapproximate30milesperhour. Input Signal and Trigger The scope trace is typically triggered by the input signal to synchronize the sweep with the signal. This prevents the signal from walking across the display. The signal can also be triggered independent of the input signal by selecting the automatic trigger feature. Oscilloscope FeaturesSection 6 TOYOTA Technical Training Time Scale Selecting 1.TIME allows adjustment of time per division by pressing the up and down keys. Each division can be adjusted to represent from .2ms to 20 seconds. Voltage Scale Selecting 2.VOLT, allows adjustment of volts per division by pressing the up and down arrow keys. Each division can be adjusted to represent from 0.1 to 5 volts. Trigger Level Adjustment Selecting 3.LVL allows adjustment of trigger level by pressing the up and down keys. This is the voltage above or below which the signal must go to trigger the sweep. Trigger level is set in 1/2 division increments.Diagnostic Tester Automatic Transmission Diagnosis - Course 273 GND Level Adjustment Selecting 4.GND allows adjustment of the GRD level by pressing the up and down keys. The trigger level indicator moves along with the GND level. Shifting the Pattern Display Selecting 5.=O allows you to select the leading or trailing edge of the signal as the trigger point. The trigger slope is indicated on the top right of the screen. An up arrow indicates a trigger on the rising edge (upslope). A down arrow indicates a trigger on the falling edge (downslope). Toggling the “5” key would start the slope at either the signal’s maximum voltage (downslope) or minimum voltage level (upslope). This feature has more significance when monitoring DC signals.Section 6 TOYOTA Technical Training Selecting6.TRIGallowsyoutoselectthreedifferenttypesoftrigger optionsbytogglingthe6“key.Thetriggermodeselected(n,a,ors)is displayedintheupperrightcornerofthedisplay. w Thenormaltrigger(n)usestheinputsignaltotriggerand synchronizethedisplay.Ifthereisnosignalpastthetrigger,there willbenotraceonthescreen. w Theautomatictrigger(a)usesaninternaltriggerbuiltintothe DiagnosticTestertodrivethescopesweep.Ifatriggerdoesnot occurfor250ms,atriggerisforcedtooccur.Thismakesitagreater placetostartandthenfurtheradjustmentscanbemade. w Thesingleshottrigger(s)usestheinputsignaltotriggerthesweep, however,thepatterndisplayfreezesafterasingletriggersignalis sensed.PressingtheENTERkeyorthebuttonontheautoprobe resetsthetrigger.Thetriggerisonlyactivatedwhenthesignal crossesthetriggerlevel,ortheENTERkeyispressed.Whilewaiting forthetriggerthesingleshotindicatorshowsanuppercaseS.“ Trigger Options Selecting 6.TRIG allows you to select from three different types of trigger options: normal trigger (n), automatic trigger (a), and single shot trigger (s). Trigger level is set in 1/2 division increments Pressing7.HOLDcausesthecurrentdisplaytofreezesothatthe waveformcanbeanalyzed.Whentheholdmodeisactive,theredLED ontherightsideofthetesteristurnedON.
