Thisgearpositionisasafetyfeatureinthatitlockstheoutputshaftto thetransmissionhousing.This,ineffect,locksthedrivewheels, preventingthevehiclefromrollingforwardorbackward.Thisgear positionshouldnotbeselectedunlessthevehicleisatacompletestop astheparkinglockpawlmechanicallyengageswiththeoutputshaft andmaydamagethetransmission.Theenginecanbestartedand performancetestedintheparkposition. Reversegearpositionallowsthevehicletobackup.Cantestfor maximumoilpumppressureduringastalltest. NOTE:Theengineshouldnotstartinthisgearposition. Neutralgearpositionallowstheenginetostartandoperatewithout drivingthevehicle.Thevehicleisabletobemovedwithorwithoutthe enginerunning.Theenginecanberestartedwhilethevehicleis moving. Thisgearcanbeselectedatanyvehiclespeed;however,itwillnot downshiftdirectlyintofirstgearuntilapproximately29to39mph dependingonthemodel.Thisgearrangeprovidesformaximumengine brakingandinhibitsanupshifttothirdandsecondgearwhilein manuallow. NOTE:Theengineshouldnotstartinthisgearposition. Thisgearcanbeselectedatanyvehiclespeedandwilldownshiftto secondgear;however,inElectronicControlTransmissionsandonA40 andA340seriestransmissionswithaD-2DownshiftTimingValve,the transmissiondownshiftsfromODtothirdgearandthentosecond gear.Thisgearrangeprovidesforstrongenginebrakingandinhibits anupshifttooverdriveandthirdgearwhileinmanualsecond; however,thereareexceptionstothethirdgearupshift.Athigher vehiclespeedsofapproximately64mph,theA340willupshifttothird gearwhiletheselectorisinmanualsecond.Whiletheselectorisin manualsecond,thetransmissionwillstartinfirstgearandupshiftto secondandremaininseconduntiltheselectorismovedagain. NOTE:Theengineshouldnotstartinthisgearposition. Eachgearpositionwhichhasbeendiscussedrequiresamanual selectionbythedriver.Theautomatictransmissioncannotselectthese positionsautomaticallyonitsown.Thenextselectorpositionisthe onlypositionfromwhichthetransmissionisfullyautomatic. Indrive,thetransmissionhasthreegearratiosforward.Firstand secondgeararegearreductionratioswhichprovideforgreatertorque Park (P) Reverse (R) Neutral (N) Manual Low (L) Manual Second (2) Drive (D)SECTION 4 48 TOYOTA Technical Training inbringingthevehicleuptospeed.Thirdgearisdirectdrive,andifthe transmissionhasoverdrive,itprovidesthefourthforwardgear. Thedrivepositionistheonlypositioninwhichthetransmissionis automatic;thatis,itupshiftsanddownshiftsbasedonvehiclespeed andload.Increasedloadissensedthroughanincreasedopeningofthe throttle,andthetransmissiondownshiftstoalowergear.Witha decreaseinthrottleopening,loadisdecreasedandthetransmission upshiftstoahighergear. Wementionedthatinmanuallowgearandmanualsecondgear, enginebrakingoccurredwhilethevehiclewasdecelerating.The contrasttothischaracteristicinmanualgearsisthatin“drivefirst“ and“drivesecond“gearsthereisnoenginebraking.Inotherwords, thevehiclecoastsduringdeceleration.
