The aim of this Self-Study Program is to provide an overview of the Infotainment system components and the operation and display functions of the Infotainment system. Due to the complexity of the system, this Self-Study Program cannot achieve the depth of an operating manual, but it can serve as a reference guide to the structure of the system. Because the Infotainment system is subject to continuous development as technology advances and new applications become available, this Self-Study Program can only describe the functions currently in use. For more information about how the Infotainment system interacts within the on-board power supply system, please refer to The Phaeton On-Board Power Supply, Self-Study Program Course Number 895303. For more information about climate control functions, please refer to The Phaeton Heating and Air Conditioning System, Self-Study Program Course Number 894303. SSP274/150Introduction 2 Infotainment System Functions The Infotainment system in the Phaeton manages a large number of functions which are centrally controllable using Front Information Display Control Head J523 in the center console of the instrument panel, the multi-function steering wheel, and Rear A/C Control Head (Climatronic) E265. Functions of the Infotainment system include: ? Audio (radio, CD player). ? Navigation (route guidance, destination information). ? Trip data (distance data, fuel consumption, refueling stops). SSP274/004 ? Climate control (regulation of heating and air conditioning system). ? Suspension settings (level and damper regulation). ? Service functions (wiper blade and headlight range adjustment). ? Adjustment variants (language input, country selection, etc.). The availability of specific Infotainment functions depends upon what country the vehicle is sold in and how it is equipped.Design 3 Main Components of the Infotainment System The main components of the Infotainment system include: ? Front Information Display Control Head J523. ? Rear A/C Control Head (Climatronic) E265. ? Multi-function steering wheel. ? Display Unit in Instrument Cluster Y24. ? Control Module for Navigation with CD Mechanism J401 in the glove box. ? Antennas in the rear window. ? Telephone Microphone (Hands Free) R38 for OnStar communication. These main components are linked by the Infotainment CAN data bus. This data network is one of three CAN data bus networks in the Phaeton: ? Drivetrain CAN data bus ? Convenience CAN data bus ? Infotainment CAN data bus All three networks exchange information. This allows the Infotainment system to access a large number of sensors and actuators. Row of climate controls: – These buttons have fixed functions for controlling the heating and air conditioning system. ? Function keys with display: – The display presents the various menus and information. – The functions of the keys are menu-dependent and are shown on the display in the side columns. ? Main menu row with Menu Selection Rotary Knob E460: – The buttons in this row select the main menus. – Menu Selection Rotary Knob E460 selects an entry from a menu list by turning the knob and confirms the selection by pressing it. ? Audio row: – Some of these buttons select radio and CD player operation. – Other buttons in this row select radio stations or CDs, and regulate volume, balance and tone. SSP274/002 Audio Row Main Menu Row Function Keys with Display Row of Climate ControlsDesign 5 Multi-Function Steering Wheel In addition to the horn and driver’s airbag, the multi-function steering wheel has two button modules for activating frequently used functions. The left button module serves the functions of the adaptive cruise control (ACC) or cruise control system (CCS). Infotainment system functions are operated using the right button module. Right button module functions include: ? Subfunctions of the Infotainment system. ? Menu selection for the Display Unit in Instrument Cluster Y24. Color Display Unit in Instrument Cluster Y24 The Phaeton has a 5-inch (127 mm) color screen for the display of information in the instrument cluster. This screen can present seven different menus of various Infotainment system functions. These menus and their listed items can be selected using controls on the multi-function steering wheel. The display in the Front Information Display Control Head J523 does not change when a multi-function steering wheel menu selection is made. Severe shocks may cause the reading head to jump to another position. Shock memory returns the reading head to the position it was in just prior to the shock. The vehicle occupants will not hear the interruption since the CD player buffers the music read by the reading head for about 10 seconds before it plays back. Antennas Several convenience and Infotainment system antennas are recognizable as thin lines at the top of the rear window. In addition to these visible antennas, there are several more antenna components hidden in the upper border of the rear window. These include: ? Auxiliary Antenna (Telematics) R90 ? Antenna for Navigation System (GPS) R50 ? Antenna moduleControls 8 Front Information Display Control Head J523 Row of Climate Controls The buttons in the row of climate controls have fixed functions. In addition to these buttons there are a number of different settings provided by the function keys. SSP274/001 This is a rocker switch. It adjusts the temperature on the driver or front passenger sides separately in steps of 1.0 °F (0.5 °C). The side with the red dot raises the temperature, and the side with the blue dot lowers the temperature. The temperature setting is displayed in the Front Information Display Control Head J523 and, if selected, in the color or monochrome Display Unit in Instrument Cluster Y24. The buttons in the row of climate controls are always active no matter what main Infotainment system menu is currently on the screen. Button Functions This turns the rear window heater on or off. This turns the manual air recirculation function on or off. This turns the manual defrost function on or off. This is the button for the automatic climate control. It adjusts the air temperature, air volume, and air distribution automatically to reach the selected temperature as quickly as possible and keep a constant temperature. This synchronizes all settings in the four climate zones to match the driver’s settings. SSP274/024 SSP274/026 SSP274/027 SSP274/028 SSP274/029 SSP274/030Controls 9 Function Keys There are four function keys on each side of the 7-inch (178 mm) color display, for a total of eight keys. The functions of these keys are different depending on whether the main menu or a submenu is selected. SSP274/011 Function Icons In other words, the functions are menu-dependent. Each function is described by a term or icon next to the function key in one of the two dark border strips on the sides of the color screen. 104.1 MHz Another possibility is to use the Menu Selection Rotary Knob E460 to select or confirm a function. This option is indicated on screen by a small-circled dot next to the key. To return to the previous level, one function key always has a “Back” or “Cancel” function indicated by an arrow. Another use of function keys is to select submenus. This is indicated on the screen by a small triangle next to the key. When a submenu is started, the user is guided down through the menu system. This icon indicates that the function key turns a function on or off. An active function is displayed on screen by a color icon similar to an LED. The outer dimensions of the screen are 5.9 inches by 3.4 inches (150 mm by 85 mm) and it has a resolution of 480 by 234 pixels. The color depth is 8 bits; this means that the screen can display 256 colors. The screen is normally divided into sections that display different types of information. The dark central header contains the temperature settings for the driver and front passenger climate zones. Between these two settings is the radio station or CD track. The two dark sections on the sides of the screen are for describing the functions of the function keys. The bright central section is reserved for displaying the information in the menus. In the navigation mode a full-screen display can be selected. This uses the full area of the screen to display the image. The Menu Selection Rotary Knob E460 is positioned in the center of the main menu row. When rotated, this rotary/push knob selects values on a scale or entries from a list; when pressed, it confirms selection. Activates the context-sensitive help program.
